I often get asked questions along the lines of “what’s your process for writing a book?”
When first starting out in my early 20s, I tried the write and hope approach. This meant starting with an idea and some characters, and seeing where it took me. This is the kind of thing Stephen King advocates in his book On Writing. But, it didn’t work for me.
So, in frustration, I decided to put a plan in place next time around. And guess what, it worked. I was not only able to get to the end in a cohesive way, but after some editing and further hard work, was able to get it published.
Here are my personal tips to get writing and, most importantly, give yourself the best chance of finishing what you’ve started.
