How to Find Internships

Self assessment is important as you start your search for an internship. Know what you are looking for in order to find your ideal fit.

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • What skills are you looking to gain?
  • What field(s) are you interested in?
  • Are you location-bound?
  • Are you looking for paid/high salary opportunities or are you able to be flexible?
  • What office culture/environment do you thrive in?
  • What are your values? Does this position and organization uphold them?
  • Are you looking for a job that will pay bills, or directly relates to your career goals?
  • How qualified are you in relation to the position description?

After you’ve assessed your needs and interests, spend time preparing your application materials and utilizing helpful tools for the search process.

Prepare for the Search:

  • Self-Assessment. See questions above.
  • Résumé. Create/update a draft/template.
  • Cover letter. Create/update a draft/template.
  • LinkedIn. Create/update profile.
  • Application tracking sheet. Develop in Excel/Google Sheets.
  • Timeline. Review industry-specific recruitment timeline.
  • Make time. Schedule time for job/internship-related tasks and research.

Take Action:

  • Search and connect with people on LinkedIn
  • Customize each résumé and cover letter per job description
  • Review application materials with the Career Center
  • Prepare interview questions and responses
  • Send thank you letters to all interviewers and everyone who has helped you with this process 

How to Register Internships

Internships may be registered for two or four credits at Drew University and can fulfill the off-campus experience requirement or immersive experience requirement for Drew students. Follow the steps below to register and complete your internship to earn credits towards your degree.

Note that some majors/minors and academic programs may require a 4-credit or 2-credit internship, including: Business Studies, Civic Engagement, Environmental Studies, Pan-African Studies, and Women’s Studies.  Internship credits may also be applied to the Arts Administration, Environmental Studies, Spanish and Writing minors.  Approval for any majors/minors must be discussed with the chairperson or director of that department.

  1. If you’re interested in registering your internship, please complete our Internship Application Form to get started. This will ask you basic information about your proposed internship and goals and will help us guide your experience as you work to complete it.
  2. Once your Internship Registration Form has been submitted, reviewed, and approved, you’ll be added to the Google Classroom course for the term where you can find and upload your assignments, including the following forms:
    • Student Learning Contract (filled out by student);
    • Faculty Confirmation Form (filled out by faculty evaluator);
    • Job Supervisor Confirmation form (filled out by job supervisor).

    After these forms are completed and approved, you’ll be enrolled in the course, INTC-200.

  3. INTC-200 is facilitated through Google Classroom, a free online course management tool. You’ll be able to find and submit various assignments, post to discussion threads, and keep track of deadlines through this platform. Note that all assignments must be completed by the appropriate deadline in order to receive credit for your internship.
