Trenton, NJ Full-Time Job, Part-Time Job Expires June 10, 2021

Organization overview:  Artworks, Trenton’s visual art center, believes in the universal power of art to transform individuals and communities. Our mission is “Connecting community, culture and creativity through the arts,” and in all of our programming and events we seek to elevate Trenton residents of all cultures and communities, and connect them with their neighbors in Trenton and surrounding municipalities.

Artworks has a year-round exhibition schedule and other programming for artists. We produce Art All Day, Trenton’s open studio and creative space tour. Our family Art Making Day is a chance for children, teens and their care-givers to create art for free under the tutelage of working artists. Our best known event, Art All Night, offers anyone the opportunity to exhibit one work of art for free at Trenton’s amazing Roebling Wire Works building on the third weekend in June.

At Artworks, youth and teen art making is about creative problem-solving, engaging your peers and teachers, socially and intellectually. It is about fun and pride, dreaming up something new and bringing it into the world. The creative skills developed in Artworks art classes will stay with children throughout their lives, whatever path they pursue. We offer all our youth and teen art classes for free to ensure the broadest most equitable reach of our programming. During the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Artworks has shifted to free virtual programming in many areas including art education.

Position Summary:  The Artworks Education Coordinator will be responsible for the oversight and day-to-day management of Artworks’ in-house youth and teen art classes and programming, our adult art workshops, as well as our art and afterschool programming in conjunction with partner organizations. The Education Coordinator will report to Artworks’ Executive Director. The position is part-time initially, with plans to transition to full-time later in 2021.

Position Description:  We are seeking an outgoing and engaging individual who loves introducing the magic of art to people of all ages, cultures and walks of life, but has a particular soft spot for children and young adults, and an interest in the important role of art in social justice and urban revitalization. The Artworks Education Coordinator understands the importance of art in education (STEAM not STEM!); and shares our enthusiasm for unlocking students’ creative gifts and building their sense of self and possibility through the joys and discipline of art making. This position is an opportunity for the right person to change lives, be a mentor your students will never forget, and become a part of Artworks – one of New Jersey’s most dynamic arts organizations – with our culture of dedication, creative problem solving, and inclusion. Because of the shift of Artworks education programming into the virtual realm in 2020, the Education Coordinator will have the opportunity to build a fresh in-person education program as restrictions ease, while retaining some of the benefits and reach of virtual classes. The Education Coordinator position will be part-time initially, 20 hours a week, with a plan to transition to full time later in 2021.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree preferred.

• At least 1 year of experience teaching art to ages 6-17 required.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills required.

• Ability to work flexible and changing weekday hours, and Saturdays.

• Proficiency with Word and Excel, Photoshop, Constant Contact, WordPress, and social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

• Office and administrative skills strongly preferred, including budgeting, invoicing, purchasing, inventory management.

• Bilingual Spanish/English fluency strongly preferred.

• Familiarity with Trenton and the Trenton arts community preferred.

Compensation and Benefits: The salary for this position is commensurate with experience, but on the scale of a small nonprofit organization, and will be in the range of $16,000 to $19,000 for 20 hours per week. Two weeks paid vacation upon transition to full time employment.

To Apply: Interested and qualified candidates should send a resume and cover letter to education@artworkstrenton.org. Please put “Education Coordinator Opening” in the subject line of your email. Artworks is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer.

More about the company: Artworks, Trenton’s downtown visual arts center, has the mission of connecting community, culture and creativity through the arts. Our exhibitions, events and programs make art an accessible
experience for all. With this mission, our goal is to provide opportunities for creative expression, connections and
understanding among and between art students of all ages, professional and amateur artists, inner city and suburban residents, diehard art fans and first time art appreciators.

Artworks carries out its mission with year-round programming including: Art All Night; Art All Day, a city-wide open studio and public art tour; Art Making Day, a day of artistic creation; a full schedule of exhibitions, and Art Lab, a special project room that features one-month project-based residencies. Adult and youth education workshops, art classes and activities, including open studio sessions, are offered by Artworks throughout the year.
