(NOTE: This could be completed as an Internship). The Community Scholars Program is committed to fostering the next generation of young professionals and building the capacity of our community development members in New Jersey. The Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey seeks to engage upper-level college and graduate students interested in the public policy and community development fields. We provide Scholars an opportunity to be immersed within a project(s) and receive firsthand experience with some of the most impactful non-profit organizations in the State.
The program uniquely integrates opportunities for students to engage in networking and weekly professional development events and trainings facilitated by the Network. For Summer/Fall 2021, scholars can seek placements with commitments of either 150 or 300 hours with a member host organization. Scholars are also compensated with a stipend.
In response to the unprecedented circumstances of COVID-19, we have adapted the format of the program to allow for scholars to participate in-person or virtually, as organizations address the changing needs and opportunities as our host sites return to their new normal.
Our program matches students based on their career interests with one of the Network’s member organizations. Under the guidance and mentorship of their host supervisor, Scholars build critical skills and gain professional development experience in areas such as planning, communications, fiscal management, problem-solving, and time management while working within one of the following disciplines:
· Construction Management
· Public Policy and Advocacy
· Supportive and Special Needs Housing
· Client Support Programs
· Fund Development
· General or Project Finance
· Human Resources
· Project Planning
· Public Health

Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey
Since 1989, the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey has worked to improve the environment for the work of community development corporations (CDCs), and to strengthen their capacity to create housing and revitalize distressed neighborhoods throughout New Jersey. The Network is a statewide association of over 250 non-profit housing and community development corporations, individuals, professional organizations, and prominent New Jersey corporations that support the creation of housing choices and economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income community residents.
The Network and its members share a commitment to promoting economic justice and the empowerment of low-income individuals and communities, and encouraging wider participation in the framing and implementation of public policies. We support our CDC members by providing targeted technical assistance and educational programs, pursuing additional resources and improved public policies, and conducting research on ways to enhance the impact and effectiveness of the community development sector.
