Half Time Intern Pastor
The Dalles First United Methodist Church
305 E 11th Street
The Dalles, OR 97058
Karen Broehl, SPRC Chair
We are a small rural teaching congregation with experience working with, and learning from, interns. We provide a wonderful opportunity to experience a full pastor role with lots of support and encouragement. With the aid of an off-sight supervisor, you will lead the congregation through the liturgical seasons, provide pastoral care, and perform weddings and funerals. Communion and baptisms take place with the help of an elder.
This is a year-long, 25 hour per week position which could potentially be eligible to be a Field Ed placement for students who are taking online courses or a good place for graduates who still have work to do for their District Committee on Ministry. We are looking for someone from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022 (but beginning and ending dates are negotiable if you have prior commitments). Compensation includes a fully furnished 2-bedroom duplex, all utilities paid, and a full back yard to enjoy the Columbia Gorge’s 300 days of sunshine. There is a $900 monthly stipend. If the candidate is qualified as a local licensed pastor, we will use the appropriate pay scale. Mileage and other professional expenses are reimbursable. It includes 2 weeks of paid vacation, and we are flexible for the needs of a student to be absent due to other classes.
The Dalles is a small rural agricultural town of approximately 17,000. In the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, we are close to fantastic hiking, windsurfing, skiing, fishing and all types of outdoor activity. We are surrounded by cherry orchards, vineyards and wheat fields. We have a large Latino population and a significant Pacific Islander population. Our congregation includes a large Samoan extended family. We would welcome a multi-lingual, multi-cultural candidate.
We have strong lay leadership with ten years’ experience supporting an intern. We encourage the intern to find their own ministry, and we support their new ideas, including the failures.
We are also an ecumenical hub in the community. We have strong ties with the ELCA Lutheran, Episcopal, and UCC churches in town. Within our service programs, we serve with LDS, Baptists, civic groups, service groups, a large orchard, banks, and other businesses. We are looking for someone that will support our congregation’s desire to serve and be part of our community.
We are currently worshipping on Zoom and growing, or groaning, in our technological skills. We see ways to continue to serve our physically diverse attendees even when we are able to worship together again.
Please call (541-980-3170) or email (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you have any questions about this position. We would love to hear from you.
